Aloe Vera - Is it Safe For Dogs?

How Your Dog Can Get The Benefits of Aloe Vera

It is a common misconception that aloe vera is toxic to dogs. It is true, that when fed in it’s complete form, aloe vera is mildly toxic to dogs. However, this is because the latex layer (the thin layer of yellow liquid that separates the leaf skin and gel) contains saponins, which have powerful laxative effects that can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and drops in blood sugar levels. For this reason, dogs should not have access to aloe vera plants incase of accidental ingestion. However the inner leaf juice of aloe vera is perfectly safe to be fed to dogs. When fed correctly aloe vera can have numerous health benefits for your dog.

Health Benefits of Aloe Vera For Dogs

Aloe vera is a great source of antioxidants and essential vitamins A, C & E, which promote healthy eyesight, immune system function, reduce inflammation, support cell function and metabolism and promote skin and coat health. Aloe Vera is a rich source of folic acid which is essential for normal metabolic function and red blood cell production. It also contains high amounts of calcium to support strong bones and teeth and beta-carotene which is especially useful to support the immune system function in older dogs.

Soothing on Skin

Aloe vera’s natural anti-septic and anti-fungal properties means it can be used to help alleviate numerous skin conditions and promote skin health and a glossy coat. Feeding aloe vera can help promote skin health from within. Aloe vera juice can also be safely applied to the skin to soothe rashes, itchy spots and other skin injuries. Yeast infections are a relatively common skin complaint in dogs that occur as a result of excess yeast on the skin and the paws are particularly prone to developing yeast infections. Studies have shown that aloe vera gel can inhibit yeast growth, assisting in the treatment of yeast infections. It is not recommended that gel directly from the plant is applied to the skin incase your dog accidentally licks it off.

Supporting Digestive Health

Aloe vera contains a number of digestive enzymes that can promote digestive health and improve absorption of nutrients from food. It’s naturally occurring anti-inflammatory properties mean it can be used to help alleviate a number of gastrointestinal issues including leaky gut syndrome. This is a condition where undigested food molecules escape the intestine as a result of inflammation and are released into the blood stream. As aloe vera has a very high water content it can also be fed to dogs who suffer from constipation or dry hard stools to increase water content in the hind gut and support stool formation.

A Natural Anti-Inflammatory

Aloe vera has naturally occurring anti-inflammatory properties, this makes it especially good for supporting joint health and mobility. Older or more active dogs can be at a greater risk of developing joint inflammation. One of the key ingredients in our Canine Gold joint supplement is aloe vera.
